It’s one thing to grow up, and another thing to grow into yourself. I saw living proof of this in Lena, Vianne and Dee, who travelled from across the globe to follow their hearts and create something beautiful – their song Changing Clocks was released in April this year.
I think the key to living is finding that one thing that keeps you living. Lena happens to be my sister, and so I’ve known for a long time that at least one of her thing’s is singing. In the young artists’ own words, their song reflects on the passing of time, whether you like it or not. Which is so important, because it’s all too often that you hear about how time flies.
And the act of reminiscing becomes overwhelming when you realise there’s no end to time and all its endeavours. As the clocks change, so do you – in far more ways than you’ll ever notice.
Seeing my sister be involved in the making of Changing Clocks put things into perspective for me. It’s all she’s ever wanted to produce music, and this specific project was charged with passion, nerves and a real experience. Growing up, getting older and moving into new phases of life was integral to the foundation of the lyricism – but just listening to it brought on the idea that something much bigger was at play. These three teens are not only growing up but growing into themselves – and who they want to be.
Pip, a character from Great Expectations, was once described by one of my professors as “growing into the question of what could I be.” I’ll never forget how she worded that – because it is so applicable to all of us. To be able to grow into anything, more so a question, implies there are two steps involved, maybe even three if you were to include finding the answer. The first being growing up, as best you can – only then it becomes apparent enough to ask yourself, ‘what could I be?’ In a world where you can be anything – BE anything; become the question and let your curiosity find the answer.
Vianne, Dee and Lena have encapsulated the tos and fros of growing up. Coming together to create their song has solidified a friendship and a past no-one is going to forget. It’s been nothing short of beautiful seeing my sister be a part of something so meaningful, alongside two other talented teenagers. To fully grasp what I’m on about, I not only urge you to give Changing Clocks a listen, but also ask yourself: in a world where you can be anything – what could you be?
“It’s one thing to grow up, and another thing to grow into yourself.“
