I’m definitely not the first to say that change is proper scary. Crocodiles are scary too, you know how they bite and roll their bodies to break off limbs? Think of life as that crocodile, once it bites, you’ve got to roll with it to survive – or at least to keep your limbs. Ouch.
It’s the initial jolt of straying from your norm which might put you off even trying. However, it’s your mindset that’s sole cause of this fear. For me, being open to seeing what worked in terms of trying something new was the key to actually enjoying change.
Never limit a chance to work with yourself – to better yourself. Roll with the crocodile. Let the water wash over you. Be confident in your journey of growth to admit that sometimes you can be wrong about things, so make them right by allowing change, to see change.
All my life, it was a known fact that I believed pop music was useless and silly, even though I secretly enjoyed it. This stubborn mindset was holding me back from something so simple – having fun. Anyone who knows me knows, it took a lot to come forward and admit I was wrong. In the words of Justin Bieber, “never say never” to allowing your beliefs to change and alter as you grow, especially as it’s in your control; it’s the only way you can grow.
Here are some of my other NEVERS:
– I’ll never go to therapy or open-up to anyone
– I’ll never like labelling myself
– I’ll never like card or boardgames
Surely you can see that everything is susceptible to change, whether you deem it big or small.
There were more benefits to rolling with the change and letting it wash over me. When I began choosing to open-up to those close to me, and seeking short-term therapy, the fear was removed. I’m now a better communicator and a better friend to everyone I care about.
As for labels, towards the end of last year, I got diagnosed with ADHD. This was a label completely capitalised – big and bold. It took me some time to process and to become comfortable with this change; eventually, I realised it really doesn’t define me, it just explains. And suddenly, my distaste for labelling faded away. Or rather, I became better than to let my stubborn mindset hold me back any longer. If I had continued being so stubborn, I would’ve seen no change in my blind struggle to understand myself.
I’m grateful everyday I decided to roll with the crocodile. Why don’t you give it a try?
Between you and me, I still hate boardgames – but I’m working on that one.
